Sahara House is made up of two homes next door to each other, each of which is designed for a different service user group.
House One is a specially adapted, wheelchair-accessible, ten-bedroom house for service users with learning disabilities who may also have physical disabilities. House Two is a nine-bedroom house for service users with learning disabilities and complex behaviours.
The Sahara House approach
Both homes provide a supportive environment where service users live together in a thriving community while maintaining their own independence and personal space. As part of this approach, service users are encouraged to decorate and personalise their bedrooms to their own taste.
Our focus is to support Sahara House each individual to live the life they choose, by working with the service user to create a personal support plan, tailored to their preferences, needs and goals, and delivering as much or as little assistance as they wish.
Each home has 24-hour staffing, to provide tailored support and personal care as well as security.
Inside Sahara House
House One has ten large en suite bedrooms, located on the ground and first floor. The home has an additional two cmmunal bathrooms, one of which is specifically equipped for people with physical disabilities.
There is lift access to all areas of the house and six bedrooms are suitable for wheelchair users and the other four bedrooms are specially equipped for those who have mobility problems.
House Two has nine bedrooms on the ground and first floor, all accessible via the main hall or main staircase. All bedrooms are en suite, with additional showers, toilets and washbasins nearby.
Both homes have a large dining/living area, large enough for communal meals, entertaining visitors, social activities or simply watching TV. Both also have an activity room, for games, painting and arts and crafts, and a room fitted with the latest sensory light equipment.
We prepare a choice of nutritious meals in the homes’ fully equipped kitchens, where service users are supported to cook their own meals. As part of this skill-building programme, service users are supported to use their laundry rooms to do their own washing.
Other facilities in each house include a meeting room, where service users can discuss support plans and personal matters in private, and a guest room for the use of visiting family and friends.
Both houses have wheelchair-accessible landscaped gardens and House Two has a fully accessible summer house and astro turfed lawn.
Sahara House’s location is directly opposite Valentines Park and within walking distance of Ilford town centre, enabling service users to integrate with their local community as much as they wish.
Valentines Park offers sporting and other community activities and other community-based facilities include shops, a library, a cinema and places of worship.
We have excellent links to surrounding areas and to London via public transport - Gants Hill underground station and local bus routes are a couple of minutes’ walk away – and the road network, making it easy for service users to take part in activities in other locations or to visit, or be visited by, family and friends.
